      <image:title>River Thames from Limehouse Basin</image:title>
<image:caption>A 19th century waterway through London: The Back of Everywhere

This waterway is clearly man made , not a product of the natural world like a stream or a river. It is absolutely straight and of uniform width. It cuts through one of Europe’s biggest and densest cities.

As I was photographing I found that the banks of the canal are now the back of everywhere, every Business Park, warehouse, office, terraced housing, in fact it seems like the back of London.

The canal was originally built in the 1850s to transport goods between the manufacturing towns of the north, and London. Today, some of it is a derelict, over- grown wilderness, in other parts you can see through glass windows into offices and apartments.

<image:caption>A Change of Scale, Churches in the City of London

The churches are on a completely different scale being dominated by these big glass and steal buildings. All built since the deregulation of the City of London in the 1980s.

The churches were built after the great fire of 1666. They were built as an institution of local government just as much as a place of worship. I n the 19th century the city depopulated and since the 1980s the interests of international finance firms are effectively the residence of the City of London

The towers lean out of the way and avoid the church’s but completely dominate the city.
The modern language of odd shaped massive structures are completely discordant with the Baroque spires of the churches.

The tradition and history churches seem to give licence of the massive towers to exist and attract international finance.

<image:caption>The usability of Emmanuel Church in West Hampstead had been compromised by an uneven and broken floor caused by London clay heave beneath it, and by an inappropriately designed and insufficiently sized community use room inserted at the rear of one of its aisles.
Donald Insall Associates is the Inspecting Architect for the church, and has provided quinquennial reports and smaller repair projects for the building since 2007.
Donald Insall Associates installed a new structural floor and designed four new meeting rooms for use by the parish and wider community within the existing aisles, in the underused space wherein the previous meeting room had been located. These interventions, together with improved level access, new kitchen and WC facilities and new underfloor heating, aim to improve the usability of the building for the congregation and local community in the future whilst also addressing the issues causing undulations to the timber floor.</image:caption>

<image:title>City from the bank of the Thames</image:title>
